Not all vodka is created equal. šŸø This Nationa Not all vodka is created equal. šŸø

This National Vodka Day, we put 11 popular bottles to the test. Some are soft and silky, some are great entry points, and one has a faint sweet corn character that gives away what it’s made from.

Watch till the end for the full board, then tell us which bottle you’d move up (or down).

Want to taste the difference for yourself? WSET Level 1 & 2 in Spirits will teach you how.

Smoky or smooth? This bracket settled it.

Tag the friend who would have picked Macallan every single time, and the one who would never pass up an Islay peat bomb. And tell us what we should face off next.

Catch Stop 11 on the grid before you scroll further!

From Cabernet vines in Maharashtra to wheat mash in Kentucky, this stop is Maker’s Mark.

Earlier in the year I attended a tasting hosted by master distiller Dr. J. Blake Layfield at Gurgaon’s Quorum . A guided tasting led into Old Fashioneds, and a story I pass on: the first bottle of Maker’s Mark you buy is for Margie Samuels, who designed the label and hand-dipped the first bottle in red wax; the second for Bill Samuels Sr., who created the recipe. Together, they founded the distillery.

Star Hill Farm, outside Loretto, gave them spring-fed water and grain growers nearby. Distilling here goes back to 1805, as Burks’ Gristmill and Distillery; the Samuels family bought the site in 1953, distilling from ā€˜54. SIV: Samuels family, IV generation distillers; the Star, for this farm. They found their soft winter wheat mash bill by baking bread first, testing recipes before grain hit the still.

Stunning glasswork dots the grounds, a Dale Chihuly collaboration don’t miss ā€œSpirit of the Makerā€ on a warehouse ceiling: blue for spring water, gold, brown, amber for wheat and aging bourbon, red ribbon for the wax seal, cherubs for the angel’s share.

Frank Quinn takes us on a merry jaunt from mash to stills, pausing for samplers along the way, before the temperature-controlled limestone cellar a world first, home to Maker’s 46’s aging. Created by Bill Samuels Jr., son of Margie and Bill Sr., it’s the first new Maker’s expression since 1958: ten seared French oak staves finish the whisky, the 46th profile Bill tried. The cellar also ages Private Select barrelings through nine weeks of secondary aging.

The tasting room’s glasswork, Brook White’s ā€œFrom a Single Drop,ā€ traces water from spring-fed lake to bourbon. Here, Frank pulls an exclusive Cellar Aged 2025 release, aged in this limestone cellar: ~57% ABV, a blend of 11, 13 and 14-year-old whiskies, some of Maker’s oldest. Fudge, orchard fruit on the palate. A fitting close before we hand-dip our own bottles. Mine’s the 46, of course.
