Lounge bars’ dictionary meaning suggests a quieter zone with low seating arrangements. The other connotation is a hang-around place near a movie theatre. The etymology apart, lounge is an expression that creates a why-should-I-toil image, somewhat like the wearied soldiers in Lord Tennyson’s Lotus Eaters! Hectic lifestyles, odd shifts and a search for a cool space surely constitute the culture and contours of today’s lounge bars.
The lounge bar is positioned as an interesting concept for the overworked youth of today, but is it really? Sheesha could very well be swapped with a disco with spot lights and a dance floor teeming with teeny boppers, bound to prove themselves in a talent hunt! I was guilty of “great expectations”. The music, the food, the ambience and the minis, all regulars at any other discotheque in town. The Calcutta ( or Kolkata ) crowd had it going post midnight as we were wrapping up for the night people were jamming up the place, Pssst…P3 crowd of cal. hangs out here, so if at all you wanna spot Noyonika Chatterji , or Raima Sen, you can give this place a visit. I ordered a Cosmopolitan with all the flair… and I got a fairly stiff drink tasting more like a vodka straight-up with a bit of cranberry juice. Well, not bad as long as I could sit up straight at the bar counter and talk to the bartender about the chicken rolls of cal! (mind you not a great thing to do as after a while it becomes impossible to talk with blaring music and dim lights) I considered ordering for a hookah but decided against it as smoking it looked like a fire hazard to me, wasn’t any space to place my Cosmo on the bar counter, less a hookah! |
