What's in a name?
Pimms
In 1823, a London restaurant owner and businessman named James Pimm needed a drink to offer his customers that matched perfectly with the oysters he was serving. Before long he came up with a recipe of herbs, spices and fruit steeped in gin and mixed with quinine. He made the drink long by mixing his new liqueur with ginger ale, and served it in a tankard known as the 'No.1 Cup' giving the cocktail its name. In 1840 Pimm launched his No.1 commercially.
Pimms is now owned by the drinks company Diageo, but the drink is still made to the original recipe, known only to the top six people in the firm.
